Beach Head Trek Oro Bay to Gona
Day 1 – Arrive from Port Moresby or
travel on from Popendetta. If coming from Kokoda you will have to overnight the
night before at Kokoda. We travel by vehicle to the Buna region. We trek
through the Duopa Plantation which was the scene of heavy fighting, you can
still see bullet holes in some of the older Palm Trees, most were destroyed in
the battles, and we trek through the Japanese bunker system and then down past
the old and new Japanese airstrips. You can still see the large bomb craters in
the area and the positions of the Japanese anti aircraft guns. We will actual
see a Japanese anti aircraft gun and radio set in its original position. Our
walk in this area takes along the same track as the famous Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel
Photo, Raphael Oimbari and Private George Whittington. We also visit the Grave
of Raphael and pay our respects. Our trek takes us through the Giropa Point
battle area and into Old Buna. We then walk through the village onto the beach
for our short journey to the Buna Beach House. We are greeted on arrival by
traditional dances and refreshments. Our Dinner tonight is a traditional
feast. The Beach House is right on the beach and has fantastic views and great
swimming. Tonight we feast and enjoy some relaxing drinks.
Day 2 - After breakfast we take a short outrigger canoe ride across the
river to the Buna Museum and then we take a walk through the Buna battlefields
and view the Japanese bunker systems in the area. The bunkers are made out of 44
gallon drums filled with sand and covered with palm trees. We return to Buna
Beach for our boat ride to Sanananda. We make camp at the Sanananda Beach House
before setting off on our trek to the famous Huggins Corner which was the scene
of fierce battles. We discover tank shells, armaments, anti aircraft gun and a
Jeep. Our afternoon is spent relaxing at our beach front house. Our camp site is
right on the battlefields of the last major bayonet battle between the
Australians and the Japanese. Tonight we relax on the beach and enjoy a
traditional village feast.
Day 3 - after breakfast we depart for Gona, where we inspect the battle
fields of this area. We visit the Gona Mission Station and discover a vehicle
riddled with bullets from the war. We get to see the strategic positions of both
the Australian and Japanese. Mid morning we depart for our flight back to Port
Moresby.
The 3 Day trip is $795 per person and includes all accommodation, food, entertainment and transport.
We can also organise a 2 Day trip to Buna
