“In the footsteps of heroes – In the footsteps of our brothers”

February 25, 2006

Greetings from Wayne and the Kokoda Spirit Team,

Welcome to the 2006 Kokoda Trail Trekking Season. The season is off to a flyer with our first trek just returned from a challenging and exhilarating 5 day express trek from Kokoda back to Owers Corner, the trekkers had an awesome time in the challenging wet season conditions.

SPECIAL TREKS
We have a number of very special treks going out this year, including Australian Paralympian Skier Michael Milton and the Coca-Cola Community award winner. This will be a truly fantastic experience for the team and me. Coca-Cola asked me to personally lead the trek. I will need to step up my training to keep up with Michael who is a truly remarkable athlete. We also have the Mission Australia Charity Challenge going out with us along with the Victorian RSL and the AFL X-Men.

We also have school groups, Defense Force, Corporate, sporting groups, clubs and a host of individual adventurers keen to accept the challenge and conquer the Kokoda Trail.

ANZAC DAY
The Anzac Day Treks have attracted a record number of adventurers keen to walk in the footsteps of heroes and to commemorate and remember the heroic deeds of our heroes and brothers. There are still a couple of spaces left on the Anzac treks.  If you are interested, please enquire.

KOKODA SPIRIT BOOT CAMP
We have also developed our special Kokoda Boot Camp, which is run over 1, 2, 3 or 4 days depending the style of Boot Camp program required. We are also developing our 1-day program to fit in with the start of our treks for those who really want to push themselves. We utilise a proper Army style obstacle course, which is a lot of fun.

TREKKING PACKS-MERCHANDISING
Kokoda Spirit can now offer you a full supply service of all your trekking and camping equipment requirements. We can also hire or sell you the equipment. You can even pick it up on your arrival in Port Moresby at the Gateway Hotel, saving you the need to cart it from Australia. We also have a range of merchandise and gift certificates that we are selling, where all profits go back towards the porters and villages to assist with our special projects. This year we are planning to purchase a solar power generator and battery set for the porter’s village on the outskirts of Port Moresby, they at present do not have any electricity.  See the special offer for Kokoda Spirit trek mates.

TREK INFORMATION PACKS
We have extensive trek information pack for all trekkers, which includes information regarding the trail, what to expect before and after the trek, trek questionnaire regarding trek requirements, flights accommodation etc. The pack also includes a CD of Kokoda Trail pictures. It is important to get the questionnaire back to us ASAP so we can finalise all the arrangements.  You can read about what to expect before and after here.

Kokoda Spirit has also been invited to participate in the Kokoda Trail sustainable future workshop in Port Moresby. The purpose of the workshop is to develop ideas to preserve the beauty and significance of the trail and to ensure that al landowners and stakeholders benefit from the on going popularity of the trail.
