Mining The Kokoda Track - Absolutely
disgraceful!
You may have heard or seen Peter McNeil MD of
Frontier Resources talk about his company’s proposed mining site on
the Kokoda Track. I heard him speak on ABC Radio on Thursday, 1
November 2007. I not sure about your thoughts but I am appalled by
the idea! Frontier Resources is an Australian Company not a PNG
company.
His proposed diversion off the Kokoda Track for
his mine is wrong. This is his quote on ABC Radio.
The mine is “Nowhere near the original battle sites or the original
Kokoda Track”
This is totally incorrect. Obviously he does not
know his history of the battles or there locations along the Kokoda
Track. His comments are wrong and disrespectful to the Diggers that
fought on the track and to their families. Those Diggers displayed
the Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice that has allowed
Australia and all Australian’s to enjoy the lifestyle that we have
in this great Country.
The Kokoda Track should be preserved for all
Australians and PNG people to enable them to continue to show their
respect for the people who have gone before.
Mining royalties will only help a small section of
Land Owners along the track. The majority of landowners, guest house
owners and porters will miss out.
The environmental damage to the area surrounding
the track, surrounding jungle and rivers is very distressing. Tracks
of jungle have been stripped for roads and camps. What was once
pristine rivers have turned into murky dirty water, unsuitable for
drinking or washing.
We cannot allow this Australian Company or any
Other Company to mine this area where our Australian Soldiers and
Papuan New Guinea Brothers shed their blood for us.
We should be able to continue to “walk in the
footsteps of heroes” and “in the footsteps of our brothers. We need
to continue to tell the story about Kokoda and honour and respect
those that fought on the Track.
If you feel as strongly as I do about this issue
then let Frontier Resources know that they should leave the Kokoda
Track alone.
